SCOPE

My clients brief was for a house where East meets West.  They love the English country house style but wanted a strong Bhutanese influence.

DESIGN

The house has the comfort and relaxed nature that an English country home is known for mingled with the rich and vibrant culture of Bhutan. We immersed ourselves in the culture of Bhutan, travelling the country for inspiration for the house and working very closely with local artisans for the carpentry, specialist paint work and many hand woven textiles.

We took inspiration from a Bhutanese 16th Century Palace and many of the temples for a lot of the specialist hand painting you can see around the house such as the panelling in the Entry Hall – each panel has a local flower species hand painted at its centre.

Many of the Zhongs and temples around Bhutan have a very similar traditional colour palette; whilst keeping to the traditional designs in the house we wanted to freshen them up by using our own colour combinations. We worked very closely with various local suppliers to customise fabrics and textiles, such as the upholstered pelmets in the formal areas which we designed and had custom made with Bhutanese clouds – they are hand embroidered in a stump work style in silk.
