SCOPE
Our clients’ brief was to create a home where East meets West. They love English country house style but also wanted to incorporate a strong Bhutanese influence.
DESIGN
The house exudes the comfort and relaxed nature of an English country home, mingled with the rich and vibrant culture of Bhutan. We immersed ourselves in the culture of Bhutan, travelling the country for inspiration and working very closely with local artisans on the carpentry, specialist paint work and many hand woven textiles.
We took inspiration from a Bhutanese 16th Century Palace as well as from many different temples for much of the specialist hand painting displayed throughout the house, including for the panelling in the Entry Hall. Each of these panels has a local flower species hand painted at its centre.
Many of the Zhongs and temples around Bhutan use a traditional colour palette; we chose to retain the traditional designs, but to reimagine them in our own unique colour combinations. We worked very closely with various local suppliers to customise fabrics and textiles, such as the upholstered pelmets in the formal areas. These were designed and custom made, with Bhutanese clouds hand embroidered in a stump work style in silk.
